Accomplishments

One of Hyde Park’s greatest accomplishments is the establishment of the University of Chicago. With the help of John D. Rockefeller, the American Baptist Education Society, and Marshall Fields, the institution was established in 1892. It is one of the most rigorous and prestigious universities in the country that attract individuals from all over the world. The diversity and urbanization of Hyde Park can be partly attributed to the University. The university has contributed many useful facilities to the neighborhood. Some of these include: University of Chicago Medical Center, and Harper Court. The university continues to be a helpful resource for the community and contributes to the continuous urban development of the neighborhood.

Hyde Park is also home to some of Chicago’s most famous attractions and landmarks such as: The Museum of Science and Industry, The Robie House, and The Rockefeller Chapel. It has also been the home for many notable individuals such as: Barack Obama, Muhammad Ali, Louis Farrakhan, Vic Mensa, and Hugh Hefner. All of these individuals and institutions contribute to the popularity of Hyde Park.

Hyde Park hosts an annual art fair called the 57th Street Art Fair. It features “paintings, sculptures, jewelry and ceramics from more than 200 artists” (Timeout). It is a free, family friendly event that occurs in the first week of June. Anyone can go there to observe or buy the displayed art. It is a fun event in the neighborhood where residents can go to have a good time.

The Promontory is a popular music venue/ restaurant located on E 53rd Street. Individuals are able to book the space for personal events, go to enjoy a lovely meal, or go have good time at a concert.

The Promontory Point is a man made peninsula located in Burnham Park. It is located on the lakefront, so it provides amazing views for individuals. Many people go there to swim, have a picnic, take a stroll, or even host their wedding there.
